Athlete Spotlight: Meet Angela Johnson

Angela Johnson works as a trade specialist and has a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business management. She has been married for 22 years and has three boys. Her oldest son is a United States Marine, her second son will graduate high school with honors, and her youngest is in Acapella Choir. In her spare time, she is a volunteer with the Wylie East high school band, which all of her sons are current or past members of. She always shows up at the gym with a
positive attitude and has a smile on her face. She is very encouraging to all the members of CrossFit Wylie and we are very lucky to have her.

Coach Alex sat down with Angela to learn more about her and her experience with CrossFit Wylie.

Q: How long have you been at CrossFit Wylie
Angela: Since June of 2015.

Q: Why do you CrossFit?
Angela: I do it for the community and so I will work out, If I try to do this on my own I am not
going to do it

Q: Favorite CrossFit movement or lift?
Angela: The Deadlift.

Q: Least favorite CrossFit movement or lift?
Angela: Burpees.

Q: What is the thing that has surprised you the most since you started CrossFit?
Angela: The mobility and the strength in my shoulders that I have gained with CrossFit.


Q: What advice do you have for beginners? What do you wish you would have known when you started?

Angela: Don’t be intimidated, ask questions, your coaches are here to help, and modify
movements as needed.

Q: Can you tell me an interesting fact about yourself?
Angela: I went back to school to get my bachelor’s degree when I had a 3-year-old, 5-year-old, and 7-year-old.

Great job Angela! Angela is a great example of someone with some pre-existing joint issues and injuries, that didn’t really believe she could do CrossFit at the beginning. Yet here she is 3 years later, coming almost every day, fitter, stronger, and healthier. Keep up the great work! – Coach Chris

The Murph Challenge – Memorial Day

Murph – The Man

A team of 4 Navy SEALs led by LT.Lt. Michael P. Murphy | The Murph Challenge - Memorial Day Michael P. Murphy on a mission to capture or kill a key Taliban leader, found themselves seriously outnumbered in a firefight with hundreds of enemy troops. Pinned down and under intense enemy fire, their communications operator severely wounded, they were in desperate need of help. Due to the mountainous terrain, their communications could not be received. Understanding the situation, LT. Michael P. Murphy moved to open ground, to use his satellite phone, exposing himself to enemy fire. LT Murphy was mortally wounded making that call.

They continued fighting until Lt Murphy and two of his three teammates were mortally wounded. His fourth team member, severely injured himself, managed to escape and was rescued 4 days later. He went on to tell the story in a book and movie titled “The Lone Survivor”.

For his selfless leadership, courageous actions and extraordinary devotion to duty, LT. Michael P. Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the first service member to receive the medal for service in Afghanistan, and the first Navy recipient of the medal since Vietnam.

The Murph Challenge – Memorial Day

Every year on Memorial Day, Americans honor those who have fallen serving the United States Armed Forces. At CrossFit Wylie, we have a tradition of supporting The Murph Challenge by completing “Murph” the workout on Memorial Day.

If you are not a member at CrossFit Wylie, you have to sign up ahead of time. You must also either bring proof of registration from themurphcallenge.com or pay a $20 drop-in fee.

Veterans and Active Duty Military are Free.

We will run groups of 30 starting at 0900, and 0945. Wodify Heat Signups will be available starting Wednesday the 22nd at 10AM. Non-Members can register for a drop-in Here

DON’T BE DISCOURAGED if you can’t do the entire workout, not many can. Anyone can do their own version of “Murph” (1/2 Murph or even 1/4 Murph). The idea is to challenge yourself and do a little more each year.

Beginners or non-members of unconfirmed experience level will be scaled or partnered accordingly by Crossfit Wylie coaches.

Since 2013, CrossFit Wylie and our sponsors have hosted the CF4CF competition and fundraiser benefiting the North Texas Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. To date, we have raised over $60,000 for the foundation to help them find a cure! Each year we have over 120 athletes battle it out in three divisions. CF4CF is the premier non-profit throw-downs in Texas.

CrossFit Games Open

The CrossFit Games is broken up into three stages. The first step is The Open, a worldwide online competition that kicks off in October. All CrossFitters at every level are encouraged to compete. It’s basically our annual test to see where we stand. Most of us don’t worry too much about where we actually end up ranking but more about improving our ranking from previous years.

Should I Sign Up?

We don’t require anyone to register. If you want to use the CrossFit Games leaderboard to compare your performance from year to year than we suggest you sign up. If you just want to do the workouts and don’t want to register, that is great too!

You do NOT have to Sign Up for the Open to do the workouts, participate in Friday Night Lights.

Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Lights gives us the opportunity to complete the Open workouts in organized heats with judges, and feel the heat of competition while celebrating our community and each other’s achievements!

This year we will have Friday Night Lights gatherings the first, third, and fifth weeks of the open. During each week, you can also complete the workouts in your regular Friday classes. We will start the first heat at 630PM and spots will be reserved upon arrival, the night of.

Class times will be limited to 530AM / 800AM / 400PM prior to Friday Night Lights events.

USA Weightlfitng National Championships

The Nation’s Weightlifting Championship took place right here in Dallas Aug 13-16. CrossFit Wylie managed to qualify two athletes for the largest championship meet in USAW’s history!

Erik Alejos, who has been struggeling through a shoulder injury for the last 6 months, lifted in the 77kg/169lb weight class, and fought through his issues to Snatch 109kg/240lb, and Clean & Jerk 133kg/293lb for a 242kg Total. This was well under his potential, but a very successful and impressive outing considering the situation. Erik is getting his shoulder operated on and we are looking forward to seeing him stronger than ever very soon!

Jourdan Delacruz, who relocated this summer to train full time as a resident of the Olympic Training Center in Colorado made a successful return to her home state, hitting PR’s in the Snatch, Clean & Jerk and Total, for the best meet of her short career. Lifting in the 53kg/117lb weight class, she Snatched 75lk/165lb and Clean & Jerked 92kg/202lb for a 167kg total, good enough for 6th place against the best lifters in the country.

Jourdan will also be representing Team USA in the Youth Pan-American Championships on September 17th!


Sticking with the topic of weightlifting and competition, we have more and more people participating in our weightlifting program, so as you’ve likely noticed, we decided to rearrange a bit, adding a third platform and giving the gym more usable space. Not sure why we didn’t change it earlier, I really like the new layout!

This new space is not just for weightlifters! Anyone can use it, especially if you are doing the extra work outside of a normal class.

CrossFit Torva Grand Opening and Competition

Our second location, CrossFit Torva, in Addison on Beltline & Marsh is NOW OPEN! If you have friends or family in the area, send them over for a FREE workout!

Join us at Torva on September 12th at 11AM to celebrate the Grand Opening of CrossFit Torva! There will be a Free workout for anyone wanting to join us. After the workout we will hangout and socialize for a bit and then go out for lunch!

In addition to the Grand Opening, CrossFit Torva and CrossFit Wylie are joining forces for the Fall Classic Fitness Competition at Torva on October 17th. This is a great, one day competition for indivuals and teams of two, catering to ALL LEVELS of athletes. New or veteran, it will be a great experience!

The Whole Life Challenge & Hydrostatic Test

CrossFit Wylie’s 3rd Whole Life Challenge will start on September 19th. The optional Hydrostatic Body Test will be at the gym September 17th. The challenge and the test is open to the public! Get your friends and family to join us! NEW: The kickoff meetings for the challenge participants will be at 7:45PM on Thur, Sep 17th and another on Sat, Sep 19th at 11AM. The meetings are not mandatory, but definitely reccomended. We will go over the rules, guidelines, nutrition facts, etc. and have a Q&A.
